Criminal Law
In addition to white collar defense, Sirote & Permutt attorneys are experienced in handling other criminal matters. We regularly represent clients charged with DUI and other alcohol and substance abuse offenses. We assist clients with a wide variety of state and municipal matters that impact the clients’ daily life and activities, including driver’s license suspensions.
In the area of DUI defense, the vast majority of our clients are able to avoid conviction for that offense through a variety of creative strategies. We appear frequently in municipal and county courtrooms on behalf of college and graduate students at nearby universities.
While we vigorously seek to prevent arrest of our clients, we are skilled at handling issues such as bond, detention, conditions of pretrial release and other urgent matters that often arise in conjunction with the early chaotic stages of a criminal case. Our experience with the criminal process and related proceedings allows us to take a global approach to representing our clients who may be facing parallel proceedings in civil litigation. We also regularly represent professionals such as physicians, attorneys, stockbrokers, nurses, pharmacists and educators, as well as business owners who find themselves charged with criminal offenses. Often, a relatively minor charge can result in grave repercussions on a professional license, or a clients’ ability to raise capital. We understand this and strive to achieve a result in the underlying case which allows for minimal collateral consequences to a clients’ professional status.
In summary, our criminal practice tends to attract clients from business or professional backgrounds, their family members, or employees who have had little or no prior criminal record. Regardless of the offenses under investigation or charges, we are committed to zealously defending each case aggressively, but also believe that each situation is unique, and thus we are diplomatic and highly professional in our negotiations and discussions with prosecutors and law enforcement officials.
