The law firm of Sirote & Permutt, PC is pleased to announce its upcoming seminar “Tax & Legal Issues Impacting Real Estate” that will be held Aug. 8. The half-day seminar is sponsored by the Alabama CCIM Chapter, and Sirote shareholders Ronald Levitt, Brad Sklar and Donald Johnson will be the featured speakers. Topics include debt forgiveness and workouts, planning for expected tax law and rate changes, and Alabama tax incentives.
The seminar will be held Wednesday, Aug. 8 at the Birmingham office of Sirote & Permutt. Registration for the three-hour class begins at 12:45 pm. Mr. Levitt’s practice focuses on business and tax planning issues, particularly for closely held and family owned businesses. Specifically, he counsels clients in business planning, succession planning, entity formation, representation of S Corporations, Limited Liability Companies and other flow-through entities, mergers and acquisitions, purchases and sales of businesses, and healthcare law. Additionally, Mr. Levitt handles federal and state controversy matters, estate planning and charitable deduction planning, including planning and defending conservation easements. Best Lawyers in America selected him as Birmingham’s “2012 Best Lawyer of the Year” for Tax Law. Mr. Levitt, a Martindale-Hubbell AV rated attorney for over 20 years, and a fellow and on the Board of Regents of the American College of Tax Council, speaks throughout the country and is a frequent author, including being Co-author of the treatise Tax Planning for S Corporations (2d Ed.), published by Lexis/Nexis. Mr. Levitt received his undergraduate and master’s degree from the University of Alabama, his law degree from the University of Alabama School of Law and his LLM in Taxation at the University of Florida School of Law.
Mr. Sklar serves on the Executive Committee and Board of Sirote & Permutt and has served as Co-Chair of the firm’s Corporate and Tax Department. Mr. Sklar has been recognized for his leadership by numerous organizations and has been a class member in both Leadership Birmingham and Leadership Alabama. Mr. Sklar was recently appointed Chairman of the Finance and Taxation Committee of the Birmingham Business Alliance. He worked with the Alabama Legislature as a co-reporter to draft the Alabama Limited Liability Company Act and his practice focuses on business and tax planning, working closely with business entities on tax matters including incentive opportunities. Mr. Sklar is a Martindale-Hubbell AV rated attorney and is listed in the Best Lawyers in America and Chambers USA for Tax Law.
Mr. Johnson counsels business owners and corporations in the areas of M&As, tax litigation, business organization for corporations and partnerships, and tax and business planning. He assists clients in structuring, negotiating, documenting and closing transactions. Mr. Johnson works closely with business entities on state and local tax matters including incentive opportunities. Mr. Johnson is listed in Best Lawyers in America for Tax Law and is a frequent speaker on corporate taxation issues. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Federal Tax Clinic.
