Katherine Barr Appointed to Commission on Disability Rights by the American Bar Association
Sirote & Permutt shareholder Katherine N. Barr was appointed by the American Bar Association to serve as a member of the Commission on Disability Rights. Her one-year appointment becomes effective at the August 2014 Annual Meeting of the ABA.
The ABA’s Commission on Disability Rights was established in 1973 and is committed to promoting “justice and rule of law for persons with mental, physical, and sensory disabilities and to promote their full and equal protection in the legal profession.”
The Commission consists of 15 members appointed by the ABA President-elect.
Barr is a member of the law firm’s Estate, Wills & Trusts practice group and handles all aspects of estate planning and administration for clients. She assists clients in providing for a child or family member with special needs in a way that does not jeopardize government benefits. She also assists when a person with a disability will receive a personal injury settlement or an inheritance and needs to keep SSI or Medicaid. Barr is a Martindale-Hubbell AV rated attorney and is listed in Best Lawyers in America for Trusts and Estates Law. She is also a member of The American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, and serves as an officer of the Special Needs Alliance, an invitation-only, nonprofit organization of experienced special needs planning attorneys.
