"Birmingham Business Journal" Names Sirote & Permutt as Nonprofit Awards Finalist
Sirote & Permutt is pleased to announce that it has been named a finalist in the Corporate Citizen category of the Birmingham Business Journal’s (BBJ) second annual Nonprofit Awards, which recognizes local companies and nonprofits for the community service and charitable activities to which they contribute their time and money. The law firm was honored for its Sirote Supports initiative that was developed as a way to further support charities and nonprofits that strengthen the community and positively impact the areas of health, education and the arts.
The Corporate Citizen category honors companies who have demonstrated innovation and have developed best practices in specific partnerships with nonprofits at any level of engagement, including volunteer work, donations and board participation. Nominations were judged on four standards: mission, innovation, impact and sustainability.
"We could not be more proud to be named a Corporate Citizen finalist in the BBJ's 2013 Nonprofit Awards for our charitable work through Sirote Supports," says Sirote CEO John Cooper. “Throughout our near 70-year history, Sirote & Permutt has always believed that our success is intertwined with the success and prosperity of the communities in which our lawyers live and practice law, which is why we give back to our community and bring attention to well-deserving nonprofits and the incredible work they do.”
Having a dedicated effort focused exclusively on charitable giving now allows Sirote to help spread the word about their vital causes and the difference they are making throughout the community. Through the Sirote Supports website (www.SiroteSupports.com), Sirote shares information about nonprofits, charity events and cause-related topics to help increase awareness and, simultaneously, to inspire others to get involved. An average of 1.4 bylined articles are published and written each week by the lawyers and employees of the firm. The website also includes a community event calendar, photo gallery and video gallery.
More than half of Sirote’s attorneys serve on charitable boards such as the ones featured on the site. Their commitments range from volunteering at events and helping with fundraising to participating in runs or golf tournaments and handling legal issues pro-bono. In addition to the hours spent volunteering and fundraising, Sirote & Permutt continues to donate financially to the causes supported by Sirote Supports.
“Sirote Supports is really a natural evolution of what our founders instilled in us 67 years ago as a fundamental principle of this firm, and that is serving the community,” says Lenora Pate, shareholder and chair of Sirote’s health law group. “There is such an electric, contagious spirit in the firm – all due to Sirote Supports.”
The BBJ’s Nonprofit Awards also recognized organizations helping those in need in the Birmingham community. Those named for their good works range from Better Basics and Cornerstone Schools of Alabama, to Jones Valley Teaching Farm and The Women's Fund of Greater Birmingham. In addition, the Urology Health Foundation and the YWCA Central Alabama were also honored -- two organizations recognized by Sirote Supports.
BBJ Nonprofit Awards finalists were recognized in the March 15 issue of the BBJ and honored at a special luncheon on March 14. For more information or to view this article, click here.
