Corporate, Tax and Estate Planning Attorneys Speak at ASCPA Annual Meeting
Ronald A. Levitt, Bradley J. Sklar, Donald E. Johnson and Craig M. Stephens, attorneys at the law office of Sirote & Permutt, PC, were featured speakers at the Alabama Society of Certified Public Accountants (ASCPA) 93rd Annual Meeting, which was held in Birmingham, Ala. on June 7. The attorneys presented information about tax planning, which included estate planning opportunities, debt forgiveness and workouts, and tax developments affecting S Corporations.
ASCPA consists of 11 chapters across Alabama. The organization’s mission is to unite the profession of accountancy; to promote and maintain high professional, ethical and moral standards; and to promote the professional interests of Certified Public Accountants.
Mr. Levitt handles federal and state controversy matters, estate planning and charitable deduction planning, including planning and defending conservation easements. He counsels clients in business planning, succession planning and entity formation, specifically the development of S Corporations, Limited Liability Companies and other flow-through entities. He also practices health care law. Best Lawyers in America selected him as Birmingham’s “2012 Best Lawyer of the Year” for Tax Law. Mr. Levitt, a Martindale-Hubbell AV rated attorney and a fellow and on the Board of Regents of the American College of Tax Council, speaks throughout the country and is a frequent author. Most recently Mr. Levitt was interviewed for, and quoted in, an article in the April 24, 2012, issue of BNA's Daily Tax Report titled “Tax Code Basis Extender Intertwines S Corporations, Land Preservationists.”
Mr. Sklar’s practice focuses on business and tax planning issues at both the state and local level, particularly for closely held and family owned businesses. He counsels clients in tax and business planning, succession planning and entity formation. He works closely with business entities on incentive opportunities. Mr. Sklar is a Martindale-Hubbell AV rated attorney and is listed in Best Lawyers in America for Tax Law. Additionally, Mr. Sklar is an Alabama Law Foundation Fellow and a Trustee for the American Institute on Federal Taxation.
Mr. Johnson counsels business owners and corporations in the areas of M&As, tax litigation, business organization for corporations and partnerships, and tax and business planning. He assists clients in structuring, negotiating, documenting and closing transactions. Mr. Johnson works closely with business entities on state and local tax matters including incentive opportunities. Mr. Johnson is listed in Best Lawyers in America for Tax Law and is a frequent speaker on corporate taxation issues. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Federal Tax Clinic.
Mr. Stephens is co-chair of the law firm's Estates, Wills, and Trusts practice group. He represents individuals in estate planning, with a focus on tax minimization strategies. Mr. Stephens assists families with wealth transfer strategies for closely-held business interests, as part of an overall business succession plan. Mr. Stephens, a Martindale-Hubbell AV rated attorney, is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel and is listed in Best Lawyers in America for Trusts and Estates Law. He is also a past president of the Alabama Planned Giving Council and an adjunct professor of estate planning courses at Cumberland School of Law.
