The Latest in Estate Planning from Sirote Co-authors Apolinsky and Stephens

December 22, 2011

Sirote & Permutt attorneys Harold I. Apolinsky and Craig M. Stephens have recently co-authored the fourth edition of J.K. Lasser’s “New Rules for Estate & Tax Planning,” with co-author Stewart H. Welch III, of The Welch Group, LLC.

The estate planning book grants the reader a simplistic overview of the latest tax changes, in particular, the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization and Job Creation Act of 2010. “Keep More Today, Leave More to Your Heirs Tomorrow” is an appropriate subtitle given that the authors explain smart strategies for gifting assets to family members, living trust myths, using limited liability entities to protect your assets and many tips and guidelines that may help you reconsider how you plan for your future. The book is available on Amazon.com in paperback and Kindle eBook.

Apolinsky, Stephens and Welch will also be featured in the January issue of B-Metro magazine in the first ever Faces of Birmingham section that highlights the interesting people in the business and creative community. He is also the recipient of the National Association of Estate Planners & Councils’ Hartman Axley Lifetime Service award.

At Sirote, Apolinsky is certified as an estate planning law specialist by the National Association of Estate Planners & Councils (NAEPC). He has previously taught estate planning at the Cumberland School of Law and the University of Alabama Law School.

Stephens, co-chair of Sirote & Permutt’s Estates, Wills and Trusts practice group, represents individuals in the estate planning process, with a focus on tax-minimization strategies. He is an adjunct professor of estate planning and estate and gift taxation at the Cumberland School of Law. He is also the past president and current board member of the Alabama Planned Giving Council.

Welch is a nationally recognized financial advisor who is widely quoted in the press including Money magazine, the Wall Street Journal, Worth and many other publications. He has served as Chair of the Disciplinary and Ethics Commission and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. The Welch Group is a fee-only money management and financial advisory firm based in Birmingham.
